TYPES OF SURGES

Transient overvoltages

WHAT IS IT?

Very high electrical power surges, with a duration of
microseconds.

CAUSE

Mainly caused by atmospheric discharges (storms) in most cases, or by switching and network disturbances.

CONSEQUENCES

The deterioration and destruction of equipment connected to the network, such as household appliances, computers, televisions, stereos, phones, etc.
In extreme cases, they can cause damage to the installations, premises or homes where this equipment is located.

SOLUTION

The impulse generated by the transient overvoltage is diverted to the installation’s earth by means of the appropriate overvoltage protectors.

Permanent Overvoltages

WHAT IS IT?

Increases in mains voltage above 10% of the normalised value, for a time that can range from milliseconds to hours.

CAUSE

Originate by the absence of the neutral in most cases, or by failure in the regulation of the medium voltage transformers.

CONSEQUENCES

Can cause a progressive deterioration of the equipment connected to the network, thus reducing the life of household appliances, computers, televisions, music equipment, telephony, etc.
The safety of the installation and users may also be compromised.

SOLUTION

The permanent operation is performed by cutting off the power supply, acting on the main circuit breaker.
