COMBI-PRO and COMBI-PRO-MAX: What’s the difference?

COMBI-PRO and COMBI-PRO-MAX are designed for very different scenarios. Understanding the difference is key to prescribing well on site and so that stores do not mix references on the shelf. Below, you will find a practical breakdown – with numbers and examples – that will serve as a quick guide, but we will focus in detail on the COMBI-PRO-2PT, because it will be the workhorse of most of your frames.

If there is no PV self-consumption and what you need is protection against peaks and micro-cuts, the COMBI-PRO 2PT is your device. The MAX is the ‘no blackout’ option for self-consumption.

  • Transient protection: Type 2 varistors with Imax 15 kA and Up < 1.5 kV, well below the insulation level of most domestic electronics.
  • Permanent overvoltage: trips according to UNE/EN-63052/50550 standard and recloses when the voltage drops below 255 V after 10 s of verification (avoids false reconnections).
  • Undervoltage: opens if phase drops below 180 V and reconnects at 210 V once stabilised.
  • Current ratings: with various ranges from 16 A to 63 A with C-curve and 6 kA breaking capacity, you cover everything from a standard residential panelboard to a small workshop.
  • Auxiliary contacts: switched output (1 A / 230 VAC) to signal tripping and a “remote control” input that allows forced opening with an external control.
  • Format: 5 DIN modules, slightly wider than a double circuit breaker, but it saves you from installing a separate IGA + permanent overvoltage + transient protector.

With this combination, the COMBI-PRO 2PT acts as a “guardian” of the line: it cuts off to prevent damage and reconnects without the user having to go down to the panel.

What does COMBI-PRO-MAX add or remove?

The MAX maintains the same overvoltage/undervoltage tripping logic, current range, and breaking capacity, but sacrifices the transient overvoltage protection (it must be mounted separately) and instead integrates the electronics necessary to operate in island mode and activate the inverter’s backup mode when the grid fails. It also includes an additional module to the IGA that connects the neutral to ground when backup mode is entered, thus complying with ITC-BT-08 and avoiding floating neutrals.

“Safety lock”, safety comes first

Both the COMBI-PRO and COMBI-PRO-MAX models feature a safety lock function that is unique in this product category.

When the user manually lowers the lever of the PRO or PRO-MAX IGA, it will NEVER reset, regardless of whether a power outage or a power surge has occurred while the lever is lowered. This ensures that, if any work is being done on the home’s installation, the IGA will never reset under any circumstances.

Similarly, if the IGA trips due to overconsumption or a short circuit, it will not reset as it is understood that there is a problem in the installation.

In the specific case of the COMBI-PRO-MAX, when the IGA lever is manually lowered to carry out a repair or work on the home’s electrical system, it assumes there is no power failure and does not give the order to go into backup mode, thus ensuring safe, voltage-free operation.
